History
The City of Vernon received a mandate via voter support to construct a new recreational facility—named the Vernon Active Living Centre. This centre is anticipated to become a dynamic community hub, offering an inclusive and welcoming space for residents to stay active, learn, and connect. It will feature:
- A new aquatic facility, including a 50m pool, leisure pool, hot tubs, and sauna/steam room
- A double gymnasium
- A fitness centre and walking track
- Multi-purpose activity and program spaces
Special Considerations
The Vernon Active Living Centre must be built to meet current demands while anticipating future needs. The City of Vernon actively engaged with the community to gather feedback, ensuring the design reflects the priorities of local residents. Significant coordination and discussion were also required around the complex glulam “king post” trusses in the natatorium and their integration with the structural steel framework.
A key factor to success has been the highly engaged Owner group and representatives. Strong relationships with key personnel have enabled the Collins Steel Project Team to align processes and expedite decision-making with governing bodies, as well as facilitate engagement with project stakeholders, including the Syilx Nation.
