Estimator

Full-time Position in Edmonton

    At Collins Steel, the estimator’s responsibility is to quantify material, labor and subcontractor pricing for construction tenders. This position requires knowledge of steel fabrication, steel erection, miscellaneous steel, interpreting construction specifications, steel finishes and shipping. Estimators at Collins Steel need to have strong analytical skills, be detail-oriented and emphasize creating a positive customer focused experience as well as identifying and communicating risk. Collins places a premium on collaboration and team players who are willing to do right by our customer and our team.

    Responsibilities

    • Perform accurate quantity take offs from drawings to inform fabrication, drafting, and field budgets
    • Obtain and evaluate quotes for materials and sub-trades to establish accurate cost estimates
    • Maintain knowledge of competitive advantages in the industry to aid bidding process
    • Communicate with clients, suppliers, and subtrades regarding current tenders and submitted bids. Attend meetings and site visits as necessary.
    • Approach every job with an eye for collaboration and Lean practices. This is what sets our team apart in the industry as we try to build things better.

    Qualifications

    • 2+ years’ of Structural Steel experience preferred
    • 2+ years of Estimating experience preferred
    • C.E.T., Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in a construction/structural related field would be considered an asset. Red seal ironworker/welder would also be an asset
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required, as this is a customer-facing position.
    • Field/site experience, detailing experience, estimating experience or other experience related to structural steel would be an asset. Some experience is required.
    • Experience with Fabtrol or Tekla would be considered an asset, but is not required.

    Salary, benefits, and bonus/profit sharing to be negotiated and will be dependant on the candidate’s experience level and qualifications.

Operations Administrative Support (Document Control)

Full-time Position in Edmonton

    The primary role of the Operations Administrative Support is to manage our project related document control needs.

    The responsibilities include:

    Document Control

    • Receiving drawings from our customer and logging them in the project folder
    • Ensuring the transmittal matches the documents received
    • Send out drawing packages to our customer for approval
    • Receive approved drawings and file in the appropriate project folder
    • Import files from our drawing software (Tekla) into our steel fabrication management software (Strumis)
    • Ensure that all parts were imported
    • Ensure that the material imported matches the original files
    • Rectify any errors on import
    • Upload the relevant files for the processing equipment in the fabrication shop
    • Print fabrication drawings for the shop

    Reception

    • Greet visitors and clients as they enter the office
    • Answer the phone, manage general email, and direct messages to the appropriate individuals
    • Assist with preparing operational reports
    • Ensure office supplies are adequate
    • Assist with meeting setup
    • Assist other departments as needed in a wide array of tasks

    Experience Requirements

    The successful candidate with have strong computer skills, a positive outlook, be a team player, and be well organized with good communication skills. They will also hopefully be a keen learner and a problem solver. This position requires high attention to detail, problem solving skills, and time management skills.

    Previous steel industry experience, including being familiar with steel shapes and sizes is considered an asset, but is not required.
