History

The Royal Alberta Museum of Edmonton (RAM) needed a revitalized, modernized space to enhance its visitor experience, increase long-term capacity, and solidify its reputation as a leading cultural and educational hub. To achieve this, the ownership group opted for a competitively tendered design-build RFP.

Collins Steel and the Engineer of Record partnered with the General Contractor to deliver the structural design, as well as supply and install the structural steel, miscellaneous steel, and metal decking. The new facility was successfully completed in 2016 and now spans 38,000 square meters, cementing RAM’s position as a premier cultural institution in Alberta.

Processes & Outcomes

The project possessed a critical consideration—to balance all architectural and aesthetic goals with the practical constraints of the budget. Over the two-year construction period, from design through to completion, Collins Steel worked closely with the Engineer of Record to tackle everything from minor details to major challenges.

This close collaboration, combined with strong support from the General Contractor, was key to successfully mitigating high-impact issues—and ultimately ensuring that the project was delivered on time and within budget.
