History

The City of Edmonton’s Modular Supportive Housing project involved the construction of five independent supportive housing sites. These included:

  • Hope Terrace (King Park)
  • McArthur Supportive Housing (Wellington)
  • wâpanAcâhcahk – Morningstar (Terrace Heights)
  • Tâpwêhtamowin wâskahikan – tâpwê (Inglewood)
  • Unity Manor (Westmount)

Each housing project was built with a structural slab on grade, a main floor podium, two stair shafts, and two elevators constructed with structural reinforced concrete. The upper floors were built using Volumetric Modular Construction, and the main floors were designed to accommodate supportive housing amenities, offices, and a common area. While the primary structural systems did not rely on steel, it played a critical role in supporting key elements of each building’s design.

Key Considerations

The five project sites were dispersed across Edmonton, and all were active. To address this and maintain schedules, our crews often moved between project sites as work fronts became available. When challenges arose, we collaborated closely with construction managers and subtrades to facilitate effective communication and problem-solving, which ultimately led to solutions that worked for all parties involved.
